“After a decades-long hiatus from pursuing his passion for photography, Michael Lee has once again refocused his camera to capture the people and places that fuel his interests and ignite his imagination. His earlier series of documentary photographs from his time spent in Liberia, Africa, engage the viewer to a specific time period that was witnessing vast social and political turmoil. His more recent Vietnam veteran portraits, shot in stark black and white, reveal the emotions and stoicism of the men and women who served their country during a turbulent period in history.
Continually inspired by the subjects and circumstances before him, Michael Lee considers the rich narrative in photographic history while developing a keen eye towards future endeavors. Like all successful artists, Lee imbues direct facts with a wide range of emotional power and mystery. Artists have represented humankind in its many guises throughout history. These manifestations reflect the time and place in which they are created, recording timely yet universal and personal expression, revealing aspects of our inner and outer experiences. Lee’s sensitivity to his subjects allows him to become an effective visual communicator, shedding light on our past, present and future.”
